Emergency Technology

RapidSOS

Supplemental emergency data can help NMRECC telecommunicators better understand a caller's location and situation.

Technology Supporting 911

More information when seconds matter.

The Northern Middlesex Regional Emergency Communications Center (NMRECC) uses RapidSOS as one of several tools that can provide telecommunicators with supplemental information during an emergency.

Depending on the caller's device, service, and available data, RapidSOS may provide additional information such as enhanced location data, device information, vehicle crash data, or other emergency information.

This information can provide additional situational awareness to the telecommunicator handling a 911 call and help support the response of police, fire, and emergency medical services.

Important

We will still ask for your location.

Even when supplemental location information is available, telecommunicators will still ask callers to provide or confirm the location of the emergency.

Location information from a device may be incomplete, delayed, or different from the location where the emergency is actually occurring.

Always tell the 911 telecommunicator where the emergency is taking place when asked.

Supplemental Emergency Data

What information can RapidSOS provide?

The information available during a 911 call depends on the caller's device, connected service, and other factors.

LOCATION

Enhanced Location

Supplemental device-based location information may help telecommunicators identify or verify where an emergency is occurring.

VEHICLES

Crash & Vehicle Data

Some connected vehicles and devices may provide information associated with a crash or other vehicle emergency.

HEALTH

Emergency Health Information

When available and associated with the caller, emergency health information may help provide additional context during a medical emergency.

CONNECTED DEVICES

Additional Safety Data

Certain connected devices and services may make additional emergency information available to 911 through the RapidSOS platform.

Emergency Health Profile

Help provide critical information during an emergency.

During a medical emergency, callers may not always be able to clearly communicate important information such as pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, or emergency contacts.

Individuals can create a free Emergency Health Profile and associate it with their mobile phone number.

When that registered phone number calls 911, the profile may be made available to emergency communications personnel through RapidSOS where the service is supported and enabled.

Emergency Health Profile

How it works

1
Create your profile

Sign up for a free Emergency Health Profile and provide the emergency information you choose to include.

2
Call 911 in an emergency

Call from the mobile phone number associated with your Emergency Health Profile.

3
Information may be available to 911

Where supported, the emergency communications center may receive your profile through RapidSOS during the active 911 call.

Emergency Health Profile availability depends on the local 911 center's RapidSOS configuration and other technical factors. Callers should always communicate critical information directly to the telecommunicator whenever possible.

Technology Supports The Call

Technology does not replace the telecommunicator.

RapidSOS and other emergency communications technologies provide additional tools and information, but they do not replace the questions asked by a trained 911 telecommunicator.

Answer the telecommunicator's questions as clearly and completely as you can, even if you believe your phone or another device has already provided the information.

Remember

Technology can provide valuable information. Clear communication between the caller and the 911 telecommunicator remains essential.
